Tips for a Strong Relationship with Your Recruiter

Finding a new job can feel like a solo challenge, but your recruiter is your key ally! Building a strong relationship with them can significantly boost your chances of landing your dream role. Here are a few tips to help you work effectively together:

  1. Quality Over Quantity: Be Selective with Agencies:

Resist the urge to register with every recruitment agency under the sun and allow your CV to be sent far and wide. This can actually dilute your profile and make it much harder for recruiters to represent you effectively.

  • Focus on a maximum of 1 or 2 reputable agencies who specialise in your sector and have a good understanding of your skills and career goals.
  • Having your CV floating around multiple places can lead to confusion for employers and even damage your application if the same CV comes through different channels.

  1. Trust Their Expertise (But Stay Engaged):

Your recruiter knows the market and has connections you might not. Be open to their suggestions and trust their judgement. However, this doesn’t mean being passive.

  • Provide clear feedback on roles they put forward – what you liked, what didn’t quite fit, and why. This helps them refine their search.
  • Be responsive to their calls and emails. They’re working hard for you, so timely communication is crucial.
  1. Be Honest and Realistic:

Don’t inflate your skills or experience. Honesty builds trust. Similarly, be realistic about salary expectations and the types of roles available in the current market. Your recruiter can provide valuable insights here.

  1. Keep Them in the Loop About Direct Applications:

Transparency is key! If you’ve applied for any jobs directly, always let your recruiter know. This avoids any awkward double submissions and shows them you’re organised and respectful of their efforts.

  1. Be Patient (But Follow Up Appropriately):

The job search can take time. While it’s okay to check in politely for updates (e.g. after an interview), avoid bombarding your recruiter with daily emails. Trust that they are working on your behalf.

  1. Treat Them Like a Professional Partner:

Remember, this is a professional relationship. Be polite, courteous, and respectful of their time. A little appreciation goes a long way.

By following these tips, you can cultivate a strong working relationship with your recruiter, turning them into a valuable partner in your job search and increasing your chances of finding the perfect opportunity.
