How to Resign Properly

Resigning from a job can feel awkward, even when you know it is the right decision. However, how you handle your resignation matters. The legal world is smaller than people think, and leaving well can protect your reputation for years to come.

The first step is to check your contract and notice period. Make sure you understand how much notice you are required to give and whether there are any restrictions that apply after you leave.

Once you have made your decision, resign professionally and in writing. Keep your resignation letter short, polite and factual. You do not need to go into lengthy explanations or list every reason for leaving. A simple note confirming your resignation, your notice period and your intended leaving date is usually enough.

Where possible, speak to your manager or supervising partner before sending the letter. It is courteous, shows respect and avoids them finding out by email unexpectedly.

Try to stay positive during your notice period. Continue to do your job properly, hand over files carefully and help make the transition as smooth as possible. It can be tempting to mentally “check out”, but your final few weeks are often what people remember.

Avoid burning bridges. Even if you have had frustrations, a resignation meeting is rarely the best time to air every grievance. Keep things measured and professional. You may need a reference, work with former colleagues again, or even return to the firm in the future.

Finally, be discreet. Do not announce your move widely until your current firm knows and the timing is appropriate. Professionalism and confidentiality go a long way.

A good resignation is simple: be clear, be courteous and leave properly. Your next role may be the exciting step forward, but your reputation follows you.
