How To Cope When Interviews Don’t Go To Plan

Last week gave me a real reminder that interviews don’t always go to plan.

My eldest son was at a full-day degree apprenticeship assessment centre in Leeds. He was about to start a team presentation when the poor guy stood next to him had an epileptic seizure. He was looked after and was ok in the end, but it understandably shook everyone in the room.

It made me think: what do you do if something serious happens in an interview or assessment? Here are a few practical tips that apply to any unexpected incident –  medical or otherwise:

1) Let the professionals take over
Your job isn’t to be the hero. Follow instructions, give space, and don’t crowd the situation.

2) Keep calm and steady your breathing
A simple trick: inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Repeat twice. It brings your adrenaline down quickly.

3) Focus on what you can control
You can’t control the disruption. You can control your behaviour: stay composed, be respectful, and listen.

4) Don’t feel guilty if you’re shaken
It’s a normal response. Employers know this. A mature reaction is far more important than pretending it didn’t affect you.

5) Ask for a moment if you need it
If the interview restarts and you’re not ready, it’s absolutely fine to say:
“Could I have a minute to gather my thoughts, please?”
That’s professionalism, not weakness.

6) Reset before you continue
When you restart, go back to basics: sit tall, slow your pace, speak clearly. You don’t need to be perfect — just composed.

7) If it’s really affected you, request to reschedule
It’s better to ask than struggle through. Any decent employer will understand.

The reality is: interviews aren’t just about answers — they’re also about how you handle pressure, uncertainty and real life.

Has anyone else experienced something unexpected mid-interview or at an assessment centre?
