Interview Questions Solicitors Are Likely To Be Asked – And How To Answer Them Well

Legal interviews are rarely about catching candidates out. Most firms are trying to understand your experience, how you approach clients and files, and whether you would be a good fit for their team.

Here are some common questions Solicitors are likely to be asked:

“Why are you looking to move?”
Keep this positive and professional. Focus on progression, quality of work, culture, flexibility, location or wanting a fresh challenge. Avoid criticising your current firm, even if there are genuine frustrations. A good answer might be:
“I’ve enjoyed my time where I am, but I’m now looking for clearer progression and the opportunity to handle a broader range of work.”

“Tell us about your caseload.”
Be specific. Firms want to know what you actually do day to day. Talk about the types of matters you handle, file numbers, level of supervision, client contact, billing, advocacy, drafting or business development. The more detail you give, the easier it is for the interviewer to assess your fit.

“Why this firm?”
This is where research matters. Mention the firm’s reputation, department, client base, culture, growth or particular type of work. Make it clear you have not just applied randomly.

“What are your strengths?”
Choose strengths that matter for the role. Client care, technical ability, organisation, drafting, supervision, commercial awareness and relationship-building are all useful examples – but always back them up with evidence.

“Where do you need to develop?”
Be honest, but sensible. Pick something you are actively working on, not something central to the job. For example, developing more business development experience or gaining exposure to more complex matters.

The strongest interview answers are clear, positive and supported by real examples. Preparation makes a huge difference – especially in a competitive market.
